I would like to try a year
without plastic.

But what would I do with the plastic wrappers
from the Honey Buns
my neighbors bring me?

I would like to try a year
without waste.

But what would I do with the bubbles and toys
from the dollar store
that my neighbors bring me?

I would like to try a year
of poverty.

But what would I do with the wealth
of compassion,
of tenderness,
of generosity?

How do I tell Sharon,
“No, thank you.
No more individual yogurts.
No more Kool-Aid and tea.
No more pre-packaged food,
piled high from a superabundant food-bank haul,
divided among us.”
