Frail Clay

Even though they have grown apart,
they still hug out of habit.
Their hearts do not well with emotion,
yet they still embrace as intimates—
palms pressed gently
against each shoulder and spine.
They scarcely speak, yet this is
the gesture that keeps them alive
to each other.
